Cafe Calabria, 3933 30th Street, North Park

Cafe Calabria is a great little cafe that has a full menu of coffee and espresso, but also serves some pastries and light sandwiches for meals. This place seems to be the Italian supporters headquarters because the whole place is decked out from floor to ceiling in Italy paraphernalia. It’s a festive atmosphere for World Cup even without a match, can you imagine what happens when the match is on?! The staff is very friendly and the woman at the counter recommended showing up an hour before the match began to have a cup of coffee and to save your spot. Apparently for the US match it was standing room only. He he. The coffee here is fantastic and I highly recommend it as a good place to catch a match. Although not an obvious place to watch football, I can see it becoming one of my favorites.

The Linkery, 3794 30th Street, North Park

The Linkery is where we went yesterday to watch the USA vs. England Match. This place has a great atmosphere and fantastic choice of food and beer. The staff is really friendly and the crowd there were football fans. There seemed to be quite a few places in North Park showing the match so I might be trolling the area a bit more to watch. The Linkery added more TVs to accommodate people, so you can watch the match in the dining room and the bar. I came an hour and a half early and the staff was very cool about letting us stay for so long.

Who can ask for more? Good food, good booze, cool people. For sustenance, I had the Portebello Flat Bread with no cheese and it was filling and really good. They are also having a World Cup of Sausage during the World Cup in which they have a sausage served depending on the nations playing. I highly recommend this place because you can get light organic food and fantastic international beer in an atmosphere conducive to sport.

World Cup Fever in San Diego

Finally after four long years the World Cup has started!!! And I am happy to say it seems that more places in San Diego seem to be showing the matches. I’m going to try and put together a pub crawl of San Diego for the World Cup matches. Of course this will have to happen primarily happen on the weekends, but at least it will give you a good taste of where to go in San Diego for the World Cup. Game on!

San Diego: A Cook’s Inspiration

So I am almost done with this semester and I’m so glad it’s almost over. In celebration of this ‘almost done-ness’ I wanted to cook something special to get me through the last two weeks. So I decided to make an experimental dish… Moroccan Meatballs. I got the idea from a friend telling me about her recent experience at a San Diego Moroccan restaurant named Marrakesh. I have eaten there before, but it has been quite awhile since I have gone back. The thought of Moroccan food made me hungry and I was too lazy to drive over to Marrakesh, so I decided to experiement a bit with some spices and stuff to create my own recipe. It turned out really well, I loved it! It was great because when I experiment with recipes it’s kind of an ALL or nothing type of deal. I either love it or I hate it. At least this time I loved it. he he… pictures of the dish and prep are to come!

The Mission: A San Diego Breakfast Landmark

As you all know, I LOVE MY BREAKFAST. So when I heard all of my friends talking about this place in North Park called the Mission I had to go. It took me a while, but I finally went and let me the say, it lives up to the hype. This place is AMAZING. It’s so good! It has a very interesting menu with tons of choices of sweet breakfast treats from pancakes to Mission French Toast to pastries. However it also has many traditional egg style breakfasts that sound mouth wateringly delicious. Although a bit off the beaten path, I recommend trying their veggie breakfast like their Soy Chorizo breakfast and they’re Asian inspired Zen breakfast. I know it does not sound appetizing, but believe me it’s amazingly good. You have got to try this place. You won’t regret it.

TIP: This place gets filled up fast so if you don’t like waiting in lines like I do, come EARLY. Also you are going to have to be patient because the wait staff can get REALLY busy, but the earlier you are the faster you eat. YUM.

The Cookie Lady, La Jolla
So I have heard so much about this place from different people and websites. So when I was hanging out in Downtown La Jolla one random day, I ran over to The Cookie Lady to finally try this place out. I got there and the place was just about to close but I as able to grab snooker doodle and a chocolate chip cookie. The cookies were not what I expected. I guess I was expecting these cookies to BLOW my mind but they were nothing really memorable. Maybe I didn’t get the right cookie, but I really was not impressed. You don’t have to take my word for it. IN FACT try it for yourself. If you like it, let me know which ones you have and maybe I can be persuaded to go back and try one of the ones you did.

A day to make Banana Bread…

Today is a beautiful sunny day. On days like this I love playing a little chef. I wish I could say that I am an excellent baker on my own, but I can only say that my baking abilities are as good as the mix I am making. he he… sad but true. Some of us are bakers and some of us are good at reading instructions, I am the latter.
